Twenty years after setting out for the Trojan War, Odysseus washes ashore on the coast of Ithaca, emaciated, a stranger in his own land, a beggar, unrecognized. Ithaca has changed. The land lies desolate; Penelope, his beloved wife, is a prisoner in her own home, besieged by unscrupulous suitors who are waiting for her to choose a new husband, a new king. Her son Telemachus, who grew up without a father, is threatened with death by the suitors; he stands in the way of their struggle for Penelope and the royal crown. Odysseus, too, has changed. Scarred by his wartime experiences, he is no longer the mighty warrior and cunning hero his people remember. He is weary from so much killing, suffering, and wandering. The war is within him; he can no longer shake it off. But he is forced to confront his past. He must find the strength once more to save his family and win back his lost love.
